Theft Accused Confesses to Vasco Murder

Goa Police had a breakthrough as 19 year old Snehal Dias arrested by Panjim Police for theft, confessed to the ghastly murder of Naresh Dourado a month back.
It may be recalled that Naresh Dourado, an executive for a cellular company was found brutally murdered with multiple stab wounds in his brother’s flat where he was residing on 2nd August. The kitchen and bathroom of the flat had bloody marks. Naresh Dourado’s mobile phone, laptop and car were missing. The car was subsequently found abandoned at Taleigao.

Salgaonkars Skip Meet on River Princess Removal

Salgaonkar Mining Industries Pvt. Ltd. (SMIPL), after raising the ante over the removal of River Princess skipped the crucial meeting of all the bidders that was held on Friday. However, the government is expected to decide on this matter on Saturday.
It may be recalled that when the government invited tenders to remove the grounded vessel, SMIPL offered to remove the vessel free of cost and even issued huge advertisements in the local newspapers over the issue.

As expected, Sonia Gandhi was elected President of the Indian National Congress for the fourth term in a row thereby setting a record to be the longest serving president of the country’s oldest political party even overtaking her own mother –in-law the enigmatic Indira Gandhi.
The Party office in New Delhi had a festive look and the announcement was officially made by Oscar Fernandes, Chairman of the Congress Election Authority.
Sonia Gandhi is a reluctant politician who has taken to politics like fish takes to water. In fact, she was not very happy when her husband the late Rajiv Gandhi a pilot by profession, was dragged into politics following the tragic death of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi.

Plane Crashes at Dubai

A United Parcel Service cargo plane crashed in an unpopulated area near the Dubai airport, killing the two crew members on board, UPS officials said Friday.
The 747-400, a UPS-operated cargo plane, crashed with two pilots about 8 p.m. as it took off for Cologne, Germany, UPS officials reported Friday.
“Safety is a key priority for UPS,” the company’s airline and international operations manager, Bob Lekites, said in a statement.
“Our thoughts go out to the crewmembers involved in the incident and their families,” he said.

Sharon’s Film Music Released

Radio Mirchi, Goa officially released the music of ShaMaz Films Tum Kitem Kortolo Aslo?  At a simple but crowded function held at Radio Mirchi conference room in Panjim on Friday.
The music for the film is composed by Balthazar Fernandes who worked as Assistant Music Director for Bollywood’s famous Kalyanji Anandji duo. He said the music for the film is based on Goan folksongs and has the distinct Goan style of singing in voices with backing of chorus. “There is melody and counter melody,” he said

There is much enthusiasm over the Dahi Handi celebrations every year and rightly so given the thrill of the game. A human pyramid to break the pot containing curds to pocket a fat purse as prize. It requires team work that calls upon trust and also agility. It is indeed a spectacle for the beholder and a test of grit and determination for the participant.
However, this year there was added enthusiasm to organize Dahi Handi competitions because sponsorships were just waiting to be handed over, the reason being the municipal elections scheduled to be held next month and aspiring candidates wanting to build up their vote base.

Ugtem Molob Pays Tributes to Kelekar

At its monthly literary meet held at T B Cunha hall recently,  “Ugtem Molob” paid rich tributes to the memories of Late Ravindra Kelekar Konkani litterateur and Jnanpith Award winner  .
Sahitya Akademi award winner , poet and freedom fighter Naguesh Karmali remembered the struggle of  Ravindrabab from 1963.  He said that Ravindrabab was always at the forefront of the Konkani movement and is considered the pioneer of modern Konkani movement.

Nitish Kumar for Talks With Maoists

Following reports that the Maoists had killed one of the four police personnel they were holding hostage, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar agreed to talks with the separatists to secure the release of the other three policemen.
Maoists holding the police personnel hostage had demanded the release of eight of their comrades languishing in jail and also withdrawal of police presence in the areas under their control.

More Clay Ganesh Idols This Year

The government’s decision to ban Ganesha idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) along with the subsidization of clay idols has proved to be a bonanza for Goan artisans as an increasing number of them are now preparing clay idols.
This is in contrast to the bleak scenario that faced these artisans a few years ago when their occupation was threatened with the glut of PoP idols which were preferred for their lower price and as the cost of producing them was low, there was a surfeit of these idols in the market, till Manohar Parrikar, the then chief minister stepped in and banned PoP idols on grounds that they were not eco-friendly.
