Caught in the eye of the storm over the political battle between the Congress and the BJP over the dissident MLAs who had checked into their hotel at Benaulim on Thursday evening, Taj Exotica this afternoon closed down its operations temporarily.

Mahanand Sentenced to 7 Years for Rape

Mahanand Naik was on Friday sentenced to seven year rigorous imprisonment on charges of rape and asked to pay a fine of ` 25,000, failing which was ordered to undergo a further period of two months simple imprisonment.
Pronouncing the judgement Friday morning, Principal Sessions Judge, Nutan Sardessai directed that the fine levied be paid to the victim.
It may be recalled that Mahanand was first summoned to the police station to investigate into the complaint lodged by his wife’s friend wherein she had accused him of raping her by coercing her into having a sexual relationship with him.

Terror Warning to Sabotage Tourism: Ravi Naik

Home Minister Ravi Naik termed the termed the terror threat information from intelligence sources to be a mere means to mar the tourism season in Goa and pointed out that every year such reports appear in the media just around the time the tourism season starts in the State.
While admitting that there are certain inputs from intelligence source which cannot be made public, he however wondered why such reports about terror threats do not find their way in the media during the off tourism season or regularly in the year instead of appearing only at the onset of the season.

And Now A Crab Named After Goa

A new species of crab found by scientists of the National Institute of Oceanography in the Zuari estuary while carrying out research on a Ballast Water Management Programme has been named Charybdis goaensis, after Goa.
The Ballast Water Management Programme being carried out for Director General Shipping involves identifying the existing species in the territory so that other species brought there through the ballast water can be recognized.
While filling the ballast tanks with water, a lot of the marine life from that region is also taken in and then subsequently when the ballast water is released at a different port, the marine life is also released in new surroundings.

GC News Desk: “Yamaha SZ Tour – Stay Ahead” rally was flagged off from Hassan Motors, Goa Friday morning. The bikers zoomed their way into Goa bringing along with them the same “Stay Ahead” spirit with which it was flagged off from Yamaha’s Surajpur factory on 15th September. The rally has covered Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat and has made its way into Goa before being flagged off to Shimoga.
Twenty bikers divided into 2 teams, each team consisting of 10 members started their journey from Delhi and are riding through different routes across the country.

Karnataka Rebel MLAs In Goa, Cong-BJP Battle Over Them

 

 

With the 14 rebel MLAs from Karnataka descending upon Goa on Thursday afternoon, it was time for high drama with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the ruling Congress Party of keeping the MLAs confined while the Congress rubbished the charge.

Of the 19 MLAs who withdrew support to the Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, 14 arrived in Goa Thursday afternoon and after lunching at Baga in Calangute, were scheduled to check into the Intercontinental at Canacona where former minister Sanjay Bandekar resides probably because Sanjay Bandekar’s son-in-law Anand Asnotikar was part of the rebel group. Incidentally, Anand Asnotikar has now been dropped from the Karnataka Cabinet.
