McEnroe Suggests Scaling Down WTA Schedule

Four times US Open Champion John McEnroe suggested that World Tennis Association scale back the schedule as he felt that it was putting too much pressure on women players, who felt are unable to handle the physical and mental stress.
He opined that women should not be made to play as many games as the men and said that it was asking “too much” of the women.

Diplomatic Row Between India and China

China’s refusal of visa to an Indian Army General has trigged off a diplomatic row between the two countries with India retaliating by refusing visa to three Chinese army officials slated to visit the country.
During the Annual Defence Dialogue between the two countries held in January this year, the visit of an Indian officer of the rank of a General to China was agreed upon without naming the officer.

Mr. Kamat on Friday said the government was firm on its decision of making NOC from the Mines Department for vessels transporting ore. Dismissing the Customs Department’s claim that vessels cannot be denied clearances due to lack of NOCs, Mr. Kamat argued that it is for the government to decide on policies and for bureaucrats to implement them.

Jimmy Carter Gets Fellow Citizen Freedom in Korea

Jimmy Carter is expected to return to the United States from his visit to North Korea along with a fellow American who was incarcerated in the communist country for illegally entering it.
Aijalon Mahli Gomes, a US citizen was sentenced to eight years of hard labour and a fine for illegally crossing into North Korea.
However, he was released on humanitarian grounds and on the personal request of Mr. Carter to North Korea’s Premier Kim Jong-II.

Churchill Slams Luizinho

PWD Minister Churchill Alemao slammed his bete noire Luizinho Faleiro over the latter’s remarks regarding special status to Goa.
Briefing media persons on Friday, Mr. Alemao pooh poohed Mr. Faleiro’s contention that Goa should have got Special Status at the time of liberation itself. Referring to a decision of the Supreme Court, he said that Goa was not liberated but conquered and hence there was no scope for special status for Goa at that point of time.

Charges Against Margao Blast Accused Framed

Trial against the accused in the infamous Margao blast case will commence from 16th September as the Sessions Court at Margao framed charges against the four accused who in turn pleaded not guilty to them.
Sessions Judge U V Bakre read out the charges in the open court to the four accused – Vinay Talekar, Vinayak Patil, Dhananjay Ashtekar and Dilip Mangaonkar – who pleaded not guilty to them. They have been charged of waging a war against the country amongst others.

Goa Government Declares State of Mourning
Gnyanpith awardee and Padma Bhushan Ravindra Kelekar passed away Friday morning after a bout of illness for which he was being treated at Apollo Victor Hospital at Margao. A multifaceted personality, Mr. Kelekar also played a stellar role in the struggle for Goa’s freedom from the Portuguese regime.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat who was amongst the first to visit the hospital upon hearing the news declared half day holiday on Friday and holiday on Saturday as a mark of respect to the Great Goan. Guard of Honour will also be presented at his cremation scheduled for Saturday.
