Market Traders once again object to exhibition

Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Savio Coutinho was once again gheraoed by the New Market Vendors Association on Friday morning over two main issues – notices issued by the council for revision in license fee and banning sale exhibition in the town.

In fact, the Association has been consistently objecting to sale exhibitions in Margao on ground that it affects their business. However, the MMC has resolved to permit only one exhibition per month and Mr. Coutinho asserted that they have not deviated from this stand.

Panchayats happy with amendment

The All Goa Panchayat Democratic Forum has expressed its happiness over the amendment to the Goa Panchayati Raj Act wherein the interest of the Panchayat has been protected and the fear of Panchayat secretary usurping the powers of the elected members allayed.

The government, faced with opposition to various housing and other developmental projects had proposed to amend the Goa Panchayati Raj Act enabling Panchayat secretaries to execute orders from BDO or Director of Panchayats and his deputies.

GMC seniors suspended for ragging

While the Goa Medical College suspended nine senior students for ragging juniors, the Goa Velha Police registered a case against them and arrested them.
All the nine senior students hailing from North India are charged by the police of forming an unlawful assembly, wrongfully restraining the junior students.

Police station attack returns to haunt Babush

Following the filing of a fresh charge sheet by the CBI against Babush Monserrate and others, Judicial Magistrate First Class, has issued notices to the Education Minister, his son Amit, former CCP Mayor Tony Rodrigues and Rajesh Ravindran.

The quartet is accused of entering the police station and attempting to take away arrested accused housed in the station lock-up. They are also charged of obstructing the police inspector and other police personnel from carrying out their duties.

Auda intervenes in Ravina’s death case

Auda Viegas of Bailancho Ekvott along with relatives of Ravina Rodrigues have given the government seven days to act against the doctors responsible for Ravina’s death.
It may be recalled that Ravina Rodrigues, a young girl from Verna was operated at a private clinic in Vasco and as her condition turned critical, she was shifted to Goa Medical College where she ultimately died due to complications arising from the surgery.

Curchorem residents irresponsible

Even though the Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council has taken some concrete steps in tackling the garbage issue in the town, it is the residents who are playing spoilsport and aggravating the situation.

The Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council, along with Curchorem Vikas Sanghatana has started a door to door garbage collection project that is aimed to reduce the litter on the streets. Besides, the council has installed dust bins wherever necessary in order to enable people to dispose off their garbage systematically.

Sanquelim flooded, govt. measures ineffective

Even as in South Goa, the district authorities were praised for their preparedness to tackle natural disasters by the central committee, in North Goa their unprepared ness was exposed when Sanquelim market was flooded on the intervening night of Tuesday-Wednesday.

Whenever there is heavy rainfall in the ghats specially at Virdi and Chorlem, the Valvanti river breaks its banks flooding the Sanquelim town lying on its banks. The problem is further aggravated as due to heavy rains, the water level at Anjunem dam touches the danger mark and authorities are forced to release the water.

SDM orders restoration of Majorda beach

Sub Divisional Magistrate Margao has directed the general manager of Majorda Beach Resort to remove sand bags at Majorda beach within seven days or face closure of the hotel for non-compliance of the order.

For the last few years, sand bags have been placed at Majorda beach in what was apparently an attempt to divert the flow of the rivulet which had resulted in not only erosion of soil at the beach but also inundation of properties upstream the rivulet.

Landslide blocks Konkan Railway once again

Movement on the Konkan Railway was once again disrupted following a landslide at Ratnagiri in Maharashtra on Wednesday morning. Various trains that were en route along the Konkan Railway have been halted at different stations. Immediately affected were the Ernakulam Delhi bound Mangala express and Trivandum-Mumbai Netravati express.
