All is Not Well With GFA: Savio

Why did you exactly withdraw from the race for president of Goa Football Association?
There are various reasons one of which was the fact that it was a triangular contest in which things could go any which way and GFA would have been in a chaos.

You said that you had initially approached Shrinivas Dempo but he had declined. What happened then?
I did approach Shrinivas and he even suggested that instead of having elections, we have a consensus on the GFA Executive Committee to which I had agreed. But then nothing happened till he announced his decision to contest. Personally I think the coterie forced Shrinivas to contest.

Kundaim Gram Sabha Rejects Dockyard

The Gram Sabha of Kundaim Village outright rejected the proposal to construct a dockyard at Mazowado in their village and the Sarpanch and other panchas were forced to support the resolution in the fact of nearly unanimous opposition to the project.
Villagers led by the Kundaim Nagrik Kruti Samiti took the Sarpanch to task for calling the promoters of the project for a meeting even after their project was rejected in April this year and accused the Sarpanch of seeking to garner support for the project by getting some villagers to sign a memorandum.

And Now an Expressway Through Goa

It appears that Goans who are currently struggling with the alignment of the proposed widening of the National Highways passing through it will have to gird up their loins for another battle royal as the Centre has sanctioned an expressway through Goa.

The six lane expressway is expected to take an entirely different route from the National Highway thereby necessitating more land acquisition which would mean dislocation of more Goans from their land.

K’taka Crisis Deepens Further, Rebels Don’t Relent

The political crisis in Karnataka which the local BJP leaders on Saturday morning gave to understand was likely to blow over, further deepened with the rebels not relenting and fleeing from Goa to Chennai.

Saturday afternoon 12 of the rebels left the Taj Exotica in six cars escorted by four police jeeps and arrived at the Dabolim airport where they were huddled in the conference room which was closed for others.

As they could not get tickets on available flights, two flights were chartered to take them away from Goa and they reportedly left for Chennai Saturday evening.

Sex Racket Busted, Manipuri Girls Rescued

Acting on the tip-off from its counterparts in Manipur, Goa police on Saturday evening raided a beauty cum massage parlour at Candolim and rescued 11 girls from Manipur who were employed as beauticians but forced into prostitution there.

The police also arrested five boys working at the parlour and detained the owner Mahalaxmi Mishra. Police disclosed that the Superintendent of Police from Manipur had written to the Goa police about human trafficking as girls from that State were being brought into Goa.

Savio Drops Out of GFA Race

Goa Football Association’s Honorary Secretary Savio Messias withdrew from the race for the organisation’s president’s post but retained his nomination for the post of member from Mormugao Zone.

With Savio’s resignation it will now be a straight fight between business tycoon Shrinivas Dempo and Peter Vaz.

While reiterating that he had filed his nomination for the top post of the organization only in the interest of football, Savio said he would continue to work for the betterment of the game.

Couple Arrested for Duping Goans

Ponda police arrested a couple for duping Goans by promising them jobs overseas and collecting money from them.

Acting on a complaint lodged by one Honorato Pereira from Tishem Borim, the Ponda Police arrested Ramji Vishwakarma and his wife Suda from their residence at Kurti. Police also recovered seven passports from them including one of a person from Nepal.

Warrants Against German Mother-Daughter Issued

The Children’s Court on Friday issued warrants against Fadela Fuchs and Indra Fuchs from Germany to depose before it in the case against Rohit Monserrate, son of Education Minister Babush Monserrate.

It may be recalled that Fadela had complained to the police that her minor daughter was sexually abused by Rohit and the case became a sensation as the accused was a minister’s son.

Micky’s Plea For Laptop & Mobile Refused

The Judicial Magistrate First Class at Margao on Friday dismissed former Tourism Minister Micky Pacheco’s application seeking the return of his laptop and mobiles seized by the CBI.

It may be recalled that the CBI had seized Micky’s mobiles and laptop after they raided his residence and office in the course of their investigations into Micky’s reported involvement in money laundering and human trafficking activities.

Mahanand Sentenced to 7 Years for Rape

Mahanand Naik was on Friday sentenced to seven year rigorous imprisonment on charges of rape and asked to pay a fine of ` 25,000, failing which was ordered to undergo a further period of two months simple imprisonment.
Pronouncing the judgement Friday morning, Principal Sessions Judge, Nutan Sardessai directed that the fine levied be paid to the victim.
It may be recalled that Mahanand was first summoned to the police station to investigate into the complaint lodged by his wife’s friend wherein she had accused him of raping her by coercing her into having a sexual relationship with him.
