Setback for Goa’s Golden Jubilee Dev Council

Barely a day after it was constituted, the Golden Jubilee Development Council set up by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, suffered a set back with its member Girish Karnad resigning from it in protest against the government’s functioning.

Noted playwright and accomplished actor, Mr. Karnad resigned from the panel to protest against the Goa government’s failure to protect art and artiste’s freedom in the wake of the cancellation of the exhibition of Dr. Jose Pereira.

While garbage gathers, MMC flounders

Margao Municipal Council has for the last many years been floundering over handling its garbage. What began as a garbage dumping site in the early 80s at Sonsddo when the place was a valley, has over the years turned into a hillock comprising of only garbage. And as the hillock grew in size the city fathers began crumbling under its weight.

What has emerged now appears to be that the Margao Municipal Council does not have the will to tackle the garbage problem and is acting mechanically to address this problem and whenever it suits them uses Sonsddo to justify its inaction.

Centre orders probe into illegal mining

The Union Cabinet at its meeting on 16th August 2010, ordered a probe into illegal mining following complaints from various States including Goa.
Illegal mining got a shot in the arm as the demand for low grade iron ore shot up in China and anybody and everybody got into the business. In Goa, illegal mining has been grabbing headlines for more than two years now.

India needs independence from Corruption

Churchill – Micky honeymoon over

PWD Minister Churchill Alemao and ex-Tourism Minister Micky Pacheco have been enemies ever since the latter took on the former in his bastion Benaulim and emerged victorious at the last assembly elections. And though the two were colleagues in Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s cabinet their relationship was always acrimonious with Micky nearly coming to blows with Churchill’s brother Joaquim Alemao on one occasion.

Manhandling of Protestor mars ID celebrations at Margao

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat unfurled the Indian flag opposite the former summer residence of the Adil Shah of Bijapur, which functioned as the Secretariat of the Goa government for many years. Incidentally this is the site where the Indian tri-colour was first unfurled officially after the Indian Army liberated Goa from the Portuguese regime.

Independence Day Observed

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat led the state to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the momentous occasion when at the stroke of midnight – to quote the country’s first Prime Minister – India arose to keep its tryst with destiny, by unfurling the national tricolour in the capital city at Panjim this morning.

Independence day celebrations were held in every Taluka headquarters with Home Minister Ravi Naik presiding over the celebrations at Ponda, while PWD Minister Churchill Alemao doing the honours at Margao.

Narco Nexus: Ravi Relents with Rider

Home Minister Ravi Naik finally relented to a CBI probe into the alleged drug dealer-police-politician nexus that dominated the recently concluded monsoon session of Goa Legislative Assembly. However, there is a rider to this.

Mr. Naik has agreed to a CBI probe only if Lucky Farmhouse gives substantial evidence to the police of this nexus. It may be recalled that this issue blew up after Lucky Farmhouse, the jilted girlfriend of drug dealer Atala posted a video clip of Atala boasting of having connections with the Goa police and politicians.
