BJP Gets a Setback in Valpoi

In a major setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party which has severely dented its claim to be a disciplined party, its State Executive Committee member Deepaji Rane on Wednesday filed his nomination as an independent candidate for the by-elections in Valpoi.

Deepaji who is known to be a die hard BJP activist took everybody by surprise with this move even though he claimed to have informed the BJP leaders about his decision to file the nomination.

Heritage Lovers Upset With Amendment

Goa Heritage Action Group (GHAG) has expressed concern over The Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment) Bill that was passed recently and alleged that it has been done to hand over national heritage to the five star lobby.

Noted historian and Executive Committee Member of GHAG Prajal Sakhardande said that the 51 monuments notified by the State government due to their historic importance would be handed over to private enterprises.

GHAG has taken exception to replacing the word “maintain” with new terms like ‘renovation’, ‘re-erection’ and ‘re-construction’ and questioned the need to implement the Act passed in March 2010 with retrospective effect from March 2007.

Enrolling of Non Resident Goans in Electoral Rolls Soon

Commissioner for NRI Affairs Eduardo Faleiro revealed that the Union Law Department is in the process of preparing the rules pertaining to time for entering the names and mode for entering the names of Non Resident Indians in the electoral rolls.

Since both the houses of the Parliament have passed the People’s Representation Act (Amendment) Bill, it is now awaiting the President’s assent. “The President is expected to give her assent any moment now as there is no controversy over this amendment seeking to provide a platform for Non Resident Indians to participate in the country’s electoral process,” he said.

‘X’ Visa for People of Indian Origin

The Union Home Department has amended the Visa Manual so that People of Indian Origin can now get ‘X’ visa which can be extended instead of the tourist visa they were being issued earlier.

In fact, the Visa Manual has been amended to specifically state that People of Indian Origin should not be issued ‘Tourist Visa’ but be issued ‘X’ Visa. Section 42 has been amended to include sub para (b) which reads “Person of Indian Origin, his/her spouse and dependent children may be granted only ‘X’ visa (NOT tourist visa) subject to producing proof of the PIO status, marriage certificate (in respect of spouse) and birth certificate (in respect of children).

Global Goans Convention in Kuwait

The Global Goans Convention will be held in Kuwait this year on 16th and 17th November with the Indian Embassy playing a major role in organizing the same, disclosed Commissioner for NRI Affairs Eduardo Faleiro.

Briefing media persons on Wednesday morning, he justified the venue on grounds that there is a sizeable Goan community working in Kuwait.

While ‘Vishwa Konkani Samelan’ a cultural programme celebrating Konkani culture which will be held on 17th November, will be highlight of the convention various other sessions including talks by eminent persons will also be held.

Countermanding Accused Acquitted


20 years after the infamous countermanding case was filed in the courts, all the accused persons were found “not guilty” of the charges of conspiracy to countermand the 1989 general elections in three constituencies.

Delivering the judgement on Tuesday, Judicial Magistrare First Class Vandana Tendulkar found “no sufficient evidence on record to prove to hold the accused persons guilty of conspiracy with intent to countermand the elections…”

She stated that the evidence presented by the prosecution failed to pass the test of law and was insufficient to prove that the nomination papers were fraudulently and dishonestly prepared.

GBA to Agitate


The Goa Bachao Abhiyan has given a call to launch an agitation over the government’s failure to notify the Regional Plan 2021 despite various promises to do so.

Announcing the decision GBA Convenor Sabina Martins said the agitation would commence with a march to the official residence of the Chief Minister at Altinho on 14th October.

Sabina pointed out that the government had even failed to honour its promise made on the floor of the house regarding notifying the RP 2021 and said that they were “fed up” over the delay.

Chaudi Garden Renovated

The Canacona Municipal Garden at Chaudi in Canacona after renovation was officially handed over to the Canacona Municipal Council on Saturday  in the presence of the councilors and local residents. General Manager of Lalit Goa Resorts Srikant Wakharkar officially handed over the garden to the council at a simple ceremony.
CMC Chairperson Shyamsunder Dessai thanked Lalit Goa Resorts Managing Director Jyotsna Suri for fulfilling many of the demands of the people of Canacona including the renovation of the garden.
