Pakistan in control of Oval test match

Pakistan are in control of the third Test match against England at The Oval after close of play on the third day.
When play was called off early because of bad light, the home sides were struggling on 221 for nine wickets, a lead of just 146 runs with one wicket remaining.

Stuart Broad is six not out and Steven Finn nought not out as England will look to add some more runs to their total on Saturday.


Farmers reject Mayawati’s ‘high compensation’

Farmers in Uttar Pradesh rejected Chief Minister Mayawati’s fresh attempt by offering higher compensation for their land acquired for the Yamuna Expressway project and threatened to stall the construction work.

The farmers continued with their protest in front of the Chhalesar police outpost in Agra for the third day and rejected Mayawati’s offer of Rs. 580 per sq metre along with the promise to give special impetus to milk production, animal husbandry, pisciculture, horticulture and sericulture to increase the farmers’ income.

Floating interest now an option

State Bank of India, the country leading bank is about to offer floating rates of interest on fixed deposits thereby giving higher returns to the depositor depending upon market conditions.

Even though the Reserve Bank of India had permitted banks to offer floating interest, SBI is providing it from 6th September this year.

SC gags SIT on Modi’s statement

The Supreme Court has directed the Special Investigating Team not to give to anybody except the trial court and the public prosecutor the statement of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, recorded by it in March. The statement will not be given even to the Nanavati Commission set up by the Union Government to investigate the riots in Gujarat.

Ministerial perks while in jail

Even though he is in jail for murdering former minister Brij Bihari Prasad, Janata Dal (U) MLA Vijay Kumar Shukla alias Munna Shukla, enjoys ministerial perks by virtue of being the chairman of Bihar Vidhan Sabha Aawas Samiti.

Criminal turned politician Shukla has been one of the most feared persons in Bihar politics. Elected from Lalganj in Vaishali district, he is presently in Hajipur jail. He has a history of being sent to the jail and in 1994 was also accused in the killing of then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah.
