Fight Results Into Suspension of Four Cops
Speaking to media persons, South Goa Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas informed that the incident occurred at Rumder, Nuvem at about 10 pm after the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) platoon, which was posted for IFFI film screenings at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao was on its way to Panjim.
The quarrel started with IRB Constable Vivek Dessai puffing out the smoke on another IRB Constable Santosh Malvi after smoking a cigarette. As a result, a verbal clash started between the duo which later resulted into physical fight.
Later, Santosh called up his brother Sagar Malvi, who is attached to GRP, Panjim and residing in Margao.
Sagar, along with two of his friends, Amardeep Chowdhary and Dhananjay Kotharkar headed towards Panjim by Swift Dzire car bearing no GA-08-F-0422. Chowdhary is attached to Maina Curtorim police station, while Kotharkar is attached to Verna fire station.
They intercepted the platoon bus at Rumder, Nuvem; after which Sagar entered the van and allegedly assaulted Vivek. Meanwhile, the IRB cops informed their platoon commandant PSI Dinanath Monkar who rushed to the site as he was not accompanying his platoon.
Monkar later lodged a complaint against Sagar Malvi, Dinanath Chowdhary and Dhananjay Kotharkar who were arrested by Maina Curtorim police.
A petty quarrel over a trivial issue between two Indian Reserve Police (IRB) cops inside a troop van (police bus) led to a full-blown fight between two groups of policemen on Wednesday night that resulted in four cops-one attached to Maina Curtorim police station, one to GRP ( Goa Reserve Police) and two IRB-getting suspension orders on Thursday. Three of the suspended cops were also arrested.
Taking cognizance of the incident, all four policemen were suspended. Sagar Malvi was suspended by SP (training), Amardeep Chowdhary suspended by South Goa SP, and Vivek Dessai and Santosh Malvi were suspended by the IRB commandant.
Meanwhile, SP Gawas has directed SDPO, Margao to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the episode and submit a report within three days.
