Kochi, Sept 22 (GCNews) Former Bishop Franco Mulakkal who has been temporarily relieved of his pastoral duties by the Vatican on being accused of raping a 44-yr old Nun 13-times between 2014 and 2016 was produced in a magistrate court in Pala on Saturday.
The accused former Bishop of the Archdiocese of Jalandhar has been sent to police custody till 24 September after the bail petition filed by his lawyer was denied and dismissed by the court.
In its remand report presented in court the Kerala Crime branch details the facts of the crime:
- Mulakkal came to the convent with the intention of sexually assaulting the nun and on 5 May, 2014, he illegally confined her in Room 20 of the guest house at around 10.48 pm and “subjected her to unnatural sexual assault.”
- The accused threatened the nun with dire consequences if she ever revealed the incident. “He raped her the next day (6 May, 2014) as well. Between 2014-2016, the victim was subjected to rape and unnatural sex 13 times in the same room,” the remand report stated.
The nun approached the Catholic Church to seek justice from the crime happening to her within the Church from a senior clergy member of the Church but some leaders of the Church such as the Archbishop of Delhi did not give her complaint the importance it needed in such matters of sexual abuse. She then took her case to the Kerala Police, wherein she exposed the fact that she was raped, sodomised and confined by former Bishop Franco Mulakkal.
