Librarians must work to imbibe reading culture in people: Goa’s Art & Culture Minister
Goa Minister for Art and Culture Govind Gaude on Thursday said that librarians must adhere to the principles led by Dr Ranganathan and work to imbibe ‘reading culture’ in people around them.
Speaking at the annual ‘Librarians’ Day’ function organized by Directorate of Art and Culture and Krishnadas Shyama Goa State Central Library at the Multipurpose Hall of Directorate of Art and Culture, Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, in the city, he said a librarian was the best guide an amateur reader can have to connect him/her with books.
Director, Directorate of Art and Culture Gurudas Pilernkar and Curator of Goa State Central Library Dr Carlos Fernandes were present on the occasion.
‘Goa- Library and Information Science Convention 2018 (GOA-LIS)’, with a theme ‘Reshaping of Libraries with Emerging Global Technology and Trends for Libraries’ was also organized on the occasion wherein 21 librarians from Goa and other states presented Research papers.
While speaking further, the Minister appreciated the Curator and staff of Goa State Central Library and urged them to keep up the good work.
“The State Central Library is one of the oldest Institutions in Goa and one of the largest hubs of knowledge in the country. The dedication, contribution, hard work and determination of the staff will help in making this library Asia’s biggest,” the Minister said.
“Librarians can play a pivotal role in connecting the globe intellectually. There is a need to start a Library Movement, and it must begin from villages in Goa. A Model Library can take this movement at a next level,” the Minister opined. He also urged the librarians to create interest in people about reading books and work with honesty and sincerity.
“Librarians are friends of the world. Hence, each one of them should share their knowledge with others. If we work with passion, only then shall we progress as a Government,” he said.
Earlier, the program began with lighting the lamp. Dr Carlos welcomed the gathering while Mr Pilernkar spoke about the significance of Librarian’s Day.
The Minister later released the ‘Annual Report 2018 of State Central Library’ and four other books namely ‘West Cost Time’- compiled by Dr. Carlos Fernandes and Smt. Kanaka Swamy, ‘Tiatr Machi-Vol. II’ compiled by Dr. Carlos Fernandes, Shri. Prashant Phadte and Ms. Vinda Gadekar, ‘O GLOBO- Periodical Alphabetical Article Index (1968-1977) compiled by Maria Ana Paiva and Sneha SP Malkarnekar and ‘Goa-LIS 2018’ Peer Research paper magazine.
