Local police have failed in Bismarque Dias’s Death investigations: Wagh
GoaChronicle.com in conversation with BJP MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh on his petition to the Goa government to commissioning a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of noted priest-turned-social activist Bismarque Dias….
GC: In your personal and professional assessment. Do you suspect foul play in the death of Bismarque Dias?
Wagh: I suspect foul-play in the sudden death of Fr Bismarque Dias. He was a very strong social and environmental activist in Goa. Along the way, his activisms in the interest of Goa, would have made him many enemies. In fact a week before his untimely demise, I had met him along with his brother Mario Dias and we had, as a matter of fact discussed on the threats he had been receiving, amongst other issues of social and environmental concerns. But at that point of time, he had never taken the threats seriously. He was a firebrand that did not care about death in his commitment to fighting for Goa. He agitated against every project that was in his opinion against the interest social and environmental interest of Goa.
GC: Why are you seeking a SIT probe in to the death of Bismarque Dias? Is not Goa Police already investigating the matter?
Wagh: In my opinion the local police have failed in their investigations into the death of Bismarque Dias. While the autopsy report states drowning as the cause of death, it fails to ascertain whether it is accidental or deliberate drowning. Bismarque Dias was not a common man, his death should have been taken seriously and investigations should have proceeded swiftly and efficiently. An SIT probe in the matter would have a more focused investigation and if there is a foul-play, it will be detected.
GC: Have you raised the concern with your government on the death of Bismarque Dias and your opinion on the current investigations?
Wagh: I have had an extensive conversation with the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on the seriousness of the death and its importance to the people of Goa especially on the suspicion that Bismarque was murdered and not drowned by accident. I have petitioned for the commissioning of a three-member SIT to probe into the matter. We must ensure that the real cause of the death be ascertained and the fears of the people must be addressed.
