A major fire broke out in the Castrol oil godown at Merces in the early hours of Wednesday with eyewitnesses claiming to have heard fire cracker like sounds at 1:30 am. While initially people ignored the noise, the resulting fire spurred them to action.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel battled for over two hours to bring the fire under control which was done by spraying foam. Initially only one tender rushed to the site on receiving the call, but after assessing the situation, additional tenders from Panjim and Old Goa were requisitioned.
The cause of the fire in the godown belonging to Darshan Pai Vernekar is yet to be established so also the losses are yet to be estimated.
