A mob of 50 men, enraged over the death of a 22 year-old youth, ransacked the Cottage Hospital at Chicalim on Saturday afternoon.
A source, at the hospital, said “The mob blamed the hospital and the doctor in-charge for his death and tried to attack even the lady doctor on duty.”
According to staff on duty, Parshuram Harijan was brought to the hospital at 7pm on Friday evening. As the condition of the patient was critical, a doctor referred him to the Goa medical college (GMC) and hospital, Bambolim.
But, the relatives accompanying the patient decided to take him to a local doctor at Birla, who treats patients suffering from jaundice.
The doctor warned them not to do so, but, the relatives took the patient with them, taking responsibility for the act.
As a precaution, the doctor asked them to sign a document and take the patient out of the hospital at their own risk. At 1.30am on Saturday morning, Harijan was brought to the Cottage Hospital again, and authorities were asked to admit him there as his condition had worsened. The doctors advised the relatives that Harijan should be taken to the GMC, which his family did so in their own car.
Harijan was declared “brought dead” by the GMC doctors on Saturday morning. His postmortem was conducted and the body was sent back. Harijan was a resident of Kattem-Baina, Vasco.
Mormugao DySP Mohan Naik said, “While taking his body back home, the car was stopped outside the Cottage hospital and it was attacked. The death, so far, has been reported as due to jaundice”.
According to the staff on duty, at about 1.05pm on Saturday, about 50 men entered the hospital and straight away went to the doctor on duty, Sujata Kamat, and asked her for the whereabouts of the doctor who had attended to Harijan on Friday.
One man kicked the door, and banged his fist on another. This sparked off the mob and the group got angry and started pelting stones on windows and the entrance gate. The casualty ward was totally damaged. Medicines were destroyed and the mob broke everything that came their way.
Kamat fled for her life when the mob tried to attack her with stones and chased her. The patients in the general wards were also disturbed and panicked.
Vasco police have arrested ten persons, so far. All surrendered themselves at the police station. Police said that more arrests will follow. Dr Sanjay Dalvi, health officer at the Cottage Hospital, said, ” The attack on the hospital by a mob today has damaged the hospital. The mob has not given any particular reason behind the attack, but, it was by the family and friends of the deceased.”
