MPT Asks Zuaris To Shift Tanks

Apparently shaken by the fire that claimed the lives of three persons besides damaging property, Mormugao Port Trust has now asked Zuari Industries Ltd., a sister concern of Zuari India Oil Tanking Ltd, to shift its ammonia and phosphoric tanks from the port town.

In a letter written to ZIL, MPT Chairman P Mara Padiyan has asked them to shift its 5,000 MT ammonia storage tank situated at Headland Sada and the five phosphoric acid tanks from Khariwado Jetty to ZIL’s factory premises at Zuarinagar.

In fact the ammonia tank has been courting protest and objections right from 2003 when it was constructed and the fishing community of Khariwado have always been objecting the tanks in their areas and had in the past, even accused ZIL of releasing phosphoric acid in the sea.

MPT Chairman admitted that people are wary of the tanks after the fire that raged in Mangor and lamented that ZIOTL’s assertion during the mock drills that any gas leakage would be quickly detected proved to be wrong when naphtha leaked from the pipeline and was not detected.

While pointing out that there have been instances of leakage of phosphoric acid and overturning of ammonia carrying tankers, he said in view of public safety the MPT has asked the company to shift its tanks to its factory premises.
