My report not binding on Goa government to take action: Justice Shah
Speaking to the media Justice M B Shah who was appointed by the Central Government to investigate the illegal iron-ore mining in the state, expressed, “I am aware of the facts that illegal mining is taking place in Goa, but, after my report, I cannot say whether illegal mining activities will stop since the report is not binding on the state government to take any action or for that matter on the Centre.”
If the government both at the Centre and state-level has the will-power to stop illegal mining it can do so, he further added.
Justice M B Shah is expected to submit his report in 45 days to the Central government.
Many NGOs were skeptical about of something good coming out of the investigations as they felt that Justice Shah should have spent more time accessing the actual damage caused by illegal mining, rather than just touch on the issue with not investigating into the depth of the issue of mining, the environmental degradation and loss of revenue to the state and Centre on account of illegal mining. Some term the investigations as an eye-wash.
