Now Porn Promotes Goa Unofficially

While rapes, drugs, murders and prostitution finding its way to numerous global media footage and print reels have left a dampening and destructive effect; an old evil – pornography – using the modern medium of information – websites – have started to emerge to hammer a nail on the coffin of Goa’s once clean and safe image.
From blatant websites such as Sexygoa.com wherein the background to the sleaze is locales in Goa, to a more camouflaged online prostitution such as Goaescortsgirls.com; the new business model seems to be coupling sex escapades with the sensual and exotic appeal that Goa has both in the domestic and international market.

To elucidate, here is a look at some of the content on the Sexygoa.com site – registered under an individual living in UK, “Welcome! Sexygoa is a site for glamorous nude teens snapped while going wild in Goa. Taking stunning sexy girls to Goa and following them as they discover their inner sexual self, we deliver the results to you as breathtaking hi-def videos and 4000px pictures of unquestionable artistic and erotic value. Aren’t you willing to find out what’s so special about sandy beaches, sultry sun and striking nature that make these sizzling sexy girl beauties turn into young goddesses of love?”

Here is what you would read on Goaescortsgirls.com – a site registered under an individual living in Delhi, “Well known as a place to go to in order to relax and unwind, Goa is the original home of the Full moon party and as such is the playground for anyone looking to have fun. The nightlife is varied with many clubs bars and restaurants for any traveller or businessman to choose from; for the ideal companions please give our hostess a call to discuss your requirements and to ensure you have a wonderful time. Our girls are sun kissed goddesses who know how to help you relax and hit all the right notes behind closed doors. Our lovely women are available either at your hotel or for in-calls for your pleasure.”
The opposition party in the recently concluded Monsoon Assembly did follow up on the issue raised by concerned social activists whose plea to the government six months ago, fell on deaf ears; however the Opposition too met the same fate.  Speaking on the issue in the assembly, Chief Minister; Digambar Kamat, said, “Initial inquiries pointed out that the advertisements originated from Mumbai and abroad. Investigations are on the matter.”
However both Opposition and social activists feel that the government has been dragging its feet on the subject while the visitor numbers to the site increases.
As per to the Indian Information Technology Act 2000, Chapter XI Para 67, the Government of India clearly considers online pornography as a punishable offence. The Para reads as under:
– Para 67 – Publishing of information which is obscene in electronic form.
“Whoever publishes or transmits or causes to be published in the electronic form, any material which is lascivious or appeals to the prurient interest or if its effect is such as to tend to deprave and corrupt persons who are likely, having regard to all relevant circumstances, to read, see or hear the matter contained or embodied in it, shall be punished on first conviction with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years and with fine which may extend to one lakh rupees and in the event of a second or subsequent conviction with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years and also with fine which may extend to two lakh rupees.”

While it might be a more a legal than technical concern in blocking sites that originate abroad; on the national front the local government can ask the concerned authorities at the Centre to take cognizance of the offence, asserted a concerned legal expert in Goa.

However, social activists are demanding more. If pornography can be blocked in countries like Saudi Arabia and China can block sites like Google, then why cannot a site promoting sex and sleaze in Goa, the land created by the God’s themselves, be blocked? Is the query.
