Over 50% Mines Illegal

According to the preliminary investigations by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Goa Legislative Assembly, 41 of the 70 mines operated in Sattari, Sanguem and Quepem talukas are illegal as they did not have the requisite permissions.

These mines can be termed to be illegal as they were operating either within or close to forest areas without the mandatory certificate from the Chief Wildlife Warden of Goa government nor the clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Besides, many of the mines have exceeded the limit they were permitted to extract. Sources in the PAC revealed that nearly 98 lakh metric tonnes of ore illegally extracted from Goa, has been exported in the last three years, which corresponds to nearly 30 per cent of the ore extracted in Goa.

Incidentally, during the last financial year, a record 54 million metric tonnes of ore was exported from Goa through the Mormugao Port and Panaji Port.
