Petition Seeking De-Reservation of Pernem Ward Filed

Resident of Pernem Shekhar Govind Pednekar on Wednesday filed a petition before the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court seeking de-reservation of ward No. 9 in Pernem Municipal Council for Scheduled Tribe and instead reserving it for Scheduled Caste.

In his petition, Shekhar argued that of the 469 registered voters in Ward No. 9, 225 belong to the Scheduled Caste while the number of Scheduled Tribe voters in the ward is negligible.

HC Directs Govt. To Name Officers to Handle Sound Pollution

The Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the Goa government to name officers to deal with complaints pertaining to sound pollution and asked it to submit details of the officers including their phone numbers by next week when the case will be taken up.

The direction came following Calangute Police Inspector Nolasco Raposo’s submission before the court that as per Section 2 of the Madhya Pradesh Prevention of Noise Pollution Act that is made applicable to Goa, an officer higher than the rank of Police Inspector has to handle complaints pertaining to noise pollution.

Velsao Lake Overflows, Floods Village

Residents of Velsao village were in a panic as the lake in the village overflowed causing mini flood in the village with roads getting waterlogged and submerging the house of a poor woman.

The mini-floods submerged the house of Isabela Fernandes who only had tears to express her predicament. Besides, flooding two other houses, the water also entered a gymnasium used by the local boys.

Kidnap Accused Escapes From IPHB

Samir Shaikh who created a stir on 13th October when he attempted to commit suicide in the Children’s Court, on Tuesday escaped from the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour where he was undergoing treatment.

Samir who has been remanded to judicial custody on charges of kidnapping his own nephew and seeking ransom for his release, had slit his throat on 13th October when the judge was writing the order extending his judicial custody.

Konkani Musical Evening to Launch New Album

A musical treat awaits all Goan and more particularly Konkani music lovers when Buyao Theatres Goem holds its mega musical extravaganza at the Pai Tiatrist Auditorium, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao from 6 pm onwards on 28th October 2010.
As a tribute to the founder of Buyao Theatres, Goem; nearly half an hour of the programme will be dedicated to him with his son Sidhanath Buyao singing some of Ulhas Buyao’s evergreen songs including Channeache Rati, Mungllurachea Xarant, etc.
But more interesting is the fact that some of the songs sung by late Ulhas Buyao to stir up the presumably susegad Goan from his complacency at the time of the historic Opinion Poll will also be heard on stage that day.

Sesa Goa’s Robust Performance in Second Quarter

Sesa Goa Limited (SGL) on Monday announced its unaudited consolidated results for the second quarter and six months ended on 30th September 2010. Consolidated revenues and profit after tax were  918.34 crores and 387.90 crores respectively for the second quarter.
During this period, Iron ore production was stable at 3.2 million tonnes while sales increased by 25% to 2.0 million tonnes compared with the corresponding prior quarter.  Production in the first half of the year was a record 9.6 mt, an increase of 16% over the corresponding prior period primarily due to 1.5 mt from Dempo’s operations. 

Sharon’s Film to Have International Premiere in Kuwait

For the first time in the history of Konkani films an international premiere of the Konkani film Tum Kitem Kortolo Aslo? produced by ShaMaz Films (Goa) will be held in the State of Kuwait to give the much needed international exposure for the Konkani films to mark the 60th anniversary of Konkani cinema.
The film will be released on Friday, 22nd October at 3:00 p.m. at Cinescape Metro (Farwaniya) owned and managed by Kuwait National Cinema Co. (KNCC), followed by two other screenings at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm. It will also be screened at 3:30 pm, 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm the next day i.e. 23rd October while on 24th October, the film will be screened only at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm.

Supreme Court Raps Centre on Mhadei River

The Supreme Court on Monday rapped the Central Government for its inordinate delays in appointing the Water Dispute Tribunal to take up the row between Goa and Karnataka over the latter’s moves to divert the water from Mhadei river to a different basin.

At the last hearing of the case filed by the Goa Government, the Central government had undertaken to set up the tribunal by 18th October. However, when the matter was taken up on Monday, the Additional Solicitor General sought three weeks time to do so.
