The Transport Department on Saturday seized 23 trucks and booked over 200 cases in a major crackdown on violations by trucks transporting ore in the mining belt of the State. While 103 cases were registered in North Goa, in South Goa 119 cases were registered.
The trucks were booked for overloading and not carrying valid documents including license from the mining department and the detained trucks are held at Dodamarg, Bhamai, Pale and Bicholim under police security.
Giving credence to the protest of people from Curchorem and surrounding areas, the drive revealed that maximum violations were in Sanvordem, Rivona and Zambaulim.
The Transport Department decided to act against these violations following persistent protests by affected citizens which forced the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to announce the crackdown.
Besides, the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court has also directed the government to take action against violators and in fact stated that the permit be cancelled for any truck found violating the laid down measures thrice.
