‘Special Status’ missing in Sonia Gandhi’s speech in Goa
Addressing a crowd that was marginally more than her last visit to the state of Goa which witnessed only 14000 supporters as per the Special Protection Guards (SPG) report, All India Congress Committee, president, Sonia Gandhi in her election rally speech to the Congress supporters failed to mention the topic of ‘Special Status’ which was present in her speeches on her last two visits.
The issue of ‘Special Status’ considered by many people in Goa especially NGOs to be the solution to the rampant purchase of land mass by real estate syndicates and politicians from across the country. While in her previous visits the Congress president had promised to look into the matter and also take up the issue with the UPA government at the Centre, this time around she chose to not make a mention of it.
Political analysts believe she chose to stay clear on this issue as no headway has been made at the Centre on granting Goa ‘Special Status’ and people in Goa have taken note of the fact that the Congress has not kept up to its promise in its election manifesto of the last elections on the Special Status and neither has the Congress president. In order to avoid any further embarrassment on this issue, she chose not to mention the subject.
