South Goa Zilla Panchayat members are scheduled to visit Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and New Delhi on a ‘study tour’ costing the public exchequer 10 lakhs even though what benefit this ‘study tour’ will bring to the Zilla Panchayat or the members is unclear.
The 22 members on the ‘study tour’ are scheduled to visit the Wagha border in Punjab and also the picturesque Kulu Manali which is a holiday destination being a hill station for most Indians.
ZP member Dayanand Pagi who is co-coordinating the tour said the members will visit the Amritsar Zilla Panchayat and also meet their counterparts in Himachal Pradesh to study the Zilla patterns in these states. Significantly, ZP members had undertaken a similar ‘study tour’ to the North Eastern States the effect of which was not seen either in the functioning of the Zilla Panchayat in Goa or in the form of a report of the ‘tour’ in the files of the Zilla Panchayat.
With the funds sanctioned by the State government, the Zilla Panchayat in effect will have a nice cool holiday from 5th December to 12th December.
Meanwhile at the Zilla Panchayat meeting held on Tuesday, members including those from the ruling dispensation protested against the unequal distribution of developmental funds forcing the Chairperson Maria Rebello to distribute funds equitably in future. She also promised to distribute the dust bins and other fixtures to be procured, equally amongst the members.
