Vanamahotsav Celebrated At Vidya Vikas Mandal
Vanamahotsava started with Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, Minister for Forests Filip Neri Rodrigues, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Shashi Kumar and other government officials planting trees in the Vidya Vikal Mandal Campus. The programme was indeed blessed by heavy rain which is a must for the growth of the trees.
In the welcome address Managing Director Ramnath Kare said that they have established ‘Green Club’ for the students in order to develop a liking towards nature and animals in them.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that the forest department and the management of the Vidya Vikas Mandal should focus on planting fruit bearing tress wherein the students can avail of its benefits.
He also said that Goa has favourable forest cover and it is the responsibility of every citizen to maintain it. And if every citizen decides to take care of the surroundings in which he lives, many social problems can be tackled, he said.
He also informed that it is for the first time that government is celebrating Vanamahotsav in an educational complex which will create an impact on the minds of the students.
Shashi Kumar informed that already 6 lakh seedlings have been planted this year by the government. He appealed to students to take up tree planting as a mission which will help in soil and water conservation.
Pointing out that Goa lies in a coastal area, he said if we do not protect forests, it will lead to climatic changes which will lead to a rise in the water levels and Goa will be submerged under water.
Filip Neri Rodrigues said that trees are being cut for development in various fields and he has directed forest department to make sustainable development without cutting trees.
He also stressed on ‘each one, plant one’ motto and appealed to people to maintain Goa’s rich culture of planting trees.
