Volunteers from the District Legal Services Authority along with local police on Tuesday rescued a 40-year-old woman who was illegally confined to a room by her family for close to 20 years.
Reports suggested that the woman was forcibly restrained in the room at their residence in the Sanquelim village in North Goa by her mother and her brother when she was a college student.
When authorities found the woman after a cousin of hers complained to the police about her condition, she seemed to be in an anorexic state. She was then rushed to the Asilo district hospital in North Goa where she is currently receiving treatment.
Sanjay Dalvi, the in charge of Bicholim Police said, “No case has been registered as yet, as she is kept under observation at the health facility. Her statement will be recorded as soon as we are allowed to speak to her.”
