A senior tourism official on condition of anonymity has confirmed this and said starred hotels will also be allowed to put 12 decks beds on beaches, while unemployed youth five pairs of deck beds.
The officer said they will not permit more applications by unemployed youth than what was permitted last year, when 50 unemployed youth were allowed to put deck beds. The department has received 76 applications this season, the officer said.
The government had reduced the number of decks beds per shack in view of a petition pending before the Goa bench of the Bombay high court that alleged that excess decks beds by shack owners blocked access to the beach. The petition also charged that shack operators put deck beds in excess of what is permitted.
Before releasing the beach shack policy in September 2012, tourism department had in an affidavit filed in the high court stated that five deck beds will be allowed per shack as against ten pairs allowed in earlier years.
