A total of 167 candidates are in the fray to contest elections to 30 seats the Corporation of the City of Panaji. The last day for submitting nominations was Monday.
However, a clear picture of who will actually contest the polls will emerge only on Friday which is the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers. The CCP election is slated for March 13.
According to the State Election Commission, the scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on February 22 and 23 from 11am onwards. Candidates will be able to withdraw their papers only on February 24 and 25 between 10 am and 3 pm. The Nationalist Congress Party ( NCP) which was earlier confident of putting up hopeful corporators in 15 wards, ended up fielding candidates only in 11 wards. Analysts say that the presence of NCP-backed contestants will work to the advantage of candidates backed by opposition leader Manohar Parrikar’s panel, Panjim First.
Incidentally, more than 170 nominations were filed from February 14 until February 19. Interestingly 93 nomination papers were filed on February 21 alone. Although 270 nomination papers are on record, they are filed by around 167 candidates, a large number of whom are women.
