In a telling comment on the investigations carried out by the Margao Town Police officials, the Judicial Magistrate First Class on Wednesday discharged five of the eight accused in the infamous “swords seizure case” while framing charges against three others.
Pronouncing the order six months after the final arguments were heard, JMFC Devidas Kerkar ordered framing of charges against Bashir Shaikh, Jagdish Singh and Mohammed Mainuddin, while discharging Floyd Coutinho, Sheikh Jalil, Shaikh Maqbool, Irfan Kachi and Shaikh Faroq on grounds that there was no evidence against them.

Besides, the judge also proclaimed Mohammed Mainuddin as an absconder due to his continuous absence in the court.
The police took more than a year to file the chargesheet as the requisite sanction to prosecute the accused under Section 153-A of the Indian Penal Code for actions prejudicial to maintaining harmony was delayed.
