Four persons were arrested and police recovered 325 bags of rice to be distributed through the Public Distribution System, totally worth around Rs 1.27 lakhs following a joint operation at Patradevi by the Mapusa and Pernem police on Thursday evening.
Police also seized the vehicle that was used to transport the eight tones of rice from Mapusa and Valpoi to Sawantwadi in Maharashtra.
The operation was launched following a tip-off received by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares following which the border police were asked to look out for a blue coloured Canter bear.
Police personnel at Patradevi spotted the vehicle and immediately informed the Pernem Police Station whose officers rushed to the border and seized the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle did not have the requisite papers to transport the rice which was dispatched by Devendra Shinde, owner of the fair price shop at Khorlim in Mapusa.
Police arrested the driver of the vehicle Vijay Mahale, its cleaner Umesh Shirodker both from Sawantwadi along with Devendra Shinde, owner of the fair price shop and Satish Gawas, the owner of the vehicle.
