According to information given by the government at the recently concluded assembly session, there are as many as 41 illegal scrap yards functioning in Goa. According to government statistics, in all the State has 95 scrap yards.
Ironically, most of the scrap yards operate without any license from any authority and only Margao, Mapusa and Bicholim Municipal Councils have licensed scrap yards within their jurisdiction.
While there are 30 licenses scrap yards, in Margao they number 22. In Bicholim though there are seven scrap yards operating, only two are registered with the council.
The authorities have identified the following illegal scrap yards in the State: Mormugao – 17, Curchorem – 7, Cuncolim – 4, Valpoi and Sanquelim – 2 each.
Besides, these scrap yards in the urban areas, there are quite a number of them operating within the jurisdiction of village panchayats.
