Puducherry: In a bid to prevent the transportation of illicit arrack from Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the Andhra Pradesh police along with their Yanam counterpart and Excise officials conducted a raid in two islands in Yanam region of the Union Territory and destroyed 8000 litres of illicit arrack on Thursday.
According to reports reaching Puducherry, the joint raid was conducted in Bairava Lanka and Basarukkaluva islands where they found two illicit distilling units.
On seeing the police, the occupants escaped by jumping into the sea.
The team destroyed 8,000 litres of illegally distilled arrack, 400 liters of fermented Walsh and 700 liters of rectified spirit.
Meanwhile, Bahour police in Puducherry region arrested three persons on charges of selling illicit liquor and seized 64 litres of arrack worth Rs 20,000 and cash Rs 32,400.
In another case, Bahour police also arrested one person on charges of selling illicit liquor and seized 32 liters of arrack worth Rs.27,000 and two motorcycles used for transporting arrack.
All the arrested were handed over to the Excise department, an official release said here on Friday.
