Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa will host the 12th Lokotsav — the yearly folk festival from 4th to 13th January 2011 at Darya Sangam, Kala Academy, Panjim. In all, 200 folk artists from states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Assam, Manipur, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Goa will present folk dances of their respective states and 300 craftsmen will display their handicraft items.
Goan artists will present various Goan folk forms like Jagor, Ranmale, Kalshi Nritya, Ghode Modni, Koli dance etc. Rajasthani artists will perform Mangniyar, Chari, Bahurupia, Puppetiers, folk dances and music. The Bihu dance will be performed by artists from Assam. Artists from Gujarat will present Mewasi and Siddhi Dhamal. Besides, Maniouri artists will perform Manipuri Ras, Punjabis will perform Bhangda and Maharashtraians will present Lawani. This year, Kummi Kolattam of Tamilnadu, Badhai/Norta of Madhya Pradesh and Gotipua of Orissa will be added attractions during the festival.
More than 200 stalls will exhibit handicrafts which include bandhani, Kathputali, lakh bangles, leather bags and chappals, khadi, kotha and silk materials, handmade garments, carpets, glassware, clay art, furniture, wooden toys, block print, appliqué work as well as Goan crafts. Goans can also enjoy the taste of the traditional food items of Rajasthan and other states. There will also individual performances and cultural programmes by artists from 6.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. during festival days.
This folk festival is organized every year by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Goa in collaboration with West Zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur; Kala Academy, Goa; and Sports Authority of Goa to promote folk culture and handicrafts of different states including Goa and provide them with a platform to sell their art and crafts.
