The Bharatiya Janata Party has warned the government that it will ask for the CBI probe if it fails to act immediately on the illegal mines operating in the State.
Addressing media persons BJP MP Shripad Naik pointed out that the government has turned a deaf ear to their demand to stop illegal mining for the last three years. “We are giving the government one more chance to act, failing which we shall demand that the CBI probe this illegality,” he said.
Mr. Naik referred to the official figures given by government departments themselves. According to the Mining Department iron ore worth Rs. 4,000 crore is mined illegally in Goa.
It may be recalled that for the last two sessions of the Goa Legislative Assembly, illegal mining has been a dominant issue with even the Speaker Pratapsing Rane conceding that things were going all wrong. However, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has just refused to let an independent agency probe the illegalities in mining.
Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar has pointed out on the floor of the house that a senior police officer was plying trucks to transport the ore extracted illegally and therefore, argued that the police would be prejudiced and not investigate in the matter properly.
