Zenito Cardoso, a history-sheeter, was arrested by Porvorim police. The police are investigating a scandal wherein government official in charge of the remand home `Apna Ghar’ allegedly helped children slip out to commit thefts, and even sell the stolen goods.
Police inspector Santosh Desai said Cardoso was called for questioning, and subsequently placed under arrest. The police had caught four children earlier this week for stealing two-wheelers, laptops, etc from various places.
Probe revealed that these boys were inmates of state-run Apna Ghar. More shockingly, a care-taker at the remand home, Videsh Mandrekar, was allegedly helping them sell the stolen goods. Mandrekar was later arrested by the police.
The role of six more caretakers from the remand home is now under the scanner. Police today said that Cardoso hired the boys to rob/steal. One of the boys was also involved in a murder at Siridao beach, blamed on Cardoso’s gang, police suspect.
