The Collector, South Goa on Monday was served an ultimatum on Monday by South Goa Temple Devasthan Committee to either nab those involved in temple thefts or face an agitation.
President of the committee Dr. Venkatesh Prabhudesai argued that the increase in temple thefts was a reflection of a breakdown of the law and order machinery in the State and not a question of temple committees not take sufficient security measures to protect their properties.
Secretary of the committee Krishna Gauns pointed out that the beat system that was followed by the police earlier has practically been stopped and this was giving thieves the confidence to break temples as there is no fear of police coming by on patrol duty.
The delegation was led by MLA Damodar Naik who also asserted that it was the bounden duty of the administration to provide security at religious places.
Collector G P Naik after listening to the delegation said he would submit a report to the government suggesting that the administration provide security for temples.
