#ArrestBishopFranco: Magistrate Court extends bail petition to Catholic Bishop accused of rape

Kochi: Accused rapist Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the Archdiocese of Jalandhar appeared before the Magistrate Court in Pala, this morning as he was summoned post the chargesheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Kerala Police.

Bishop Franco Mulakkal is the first Bishop in India to be arrested and released on bail on accusations of rape and sodomy of a 44-year old nun.

The Magistrate Court accepted the petition of the senior clergyman for a bail extension.

The accused rapist was handed over a copy of the chargesheet and other related documents filed against him by the SIT which investigated the case.

The Kerala Police has charged the senior Catholic clergyman under IPC Sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (2k) (rape on a woman incapable of giving consent), 376 (2n) (causing grievous bodily harm during rape), 376 (c) (a) 377 (unnatural offence), 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) IPC Sections).

The court has posted the case for June 7th.
