Asian Games 2018: While SAG, GYA spar, Goans athletes use wind-surfing boards below par

Goans windsurfers Dayne Coelho and Katya Coelho representing India will be surfing at the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia with old wind surfing boards because the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) and Goa Yacht Association (GYA) were busy sparring with each other on who should bear the cost of the new wind surfing boards.

Authorities have claimed that the proposal to purchase two windsurfing boats which would be assigned to Goa Yachting Association (GYA) is going through a procedural rigmarole. The proposal worth Rs 15 lakh is still pending approval. Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) had moved the proposal.

SAG Executive Director V M Prabhudesai said they have gone as a part of national team. “It is the responsibility of National Federation or Union Sports ministry to provide them the equipments. We have prepared the proposal to provide two boards for Goa Yachting Association,” he stated.

Prabhudesai said these boards are to practice. “The total proposal is worth Rs 15 lakh. The tender to manufacture and supply the boards will be floated soon. We have to follow proper procedures, which takes time,” he added.

GYA President Siddharth Satardekar said that the event in which they are participating is international one, so it comes under Yachting Association of India.

“Many a times when we don’t have funds, we put up request with SAG which provides us the equipments. In this case too, we had made the request and it is being processed,” he added.

“We have tried our level best to get these boards but we don’t have our own funds. The file for procurement under government fund moves up to minister and chief minister for financial sanctioning,” Satardekar said.

The selection for Asian Games began in April. The probables were selected and there was Asian Sailing Championship in the month of June. The actual team was announced in the month of July.
