Auriyya: At least 24 migrant workers were killed and 35 others injured in a collision between two trucks at Chiruhali Miholi village under Sadar police station area on the National Highway-two, here in the wee hours of Saturday.
District Magistrate Abhishek Singh here said that the accident occurred around 0330 hours when a truck carrying migrant workers hit another stationary truck near a ‘dhaba’.
The state government has announced the ex-gratia of two lakh Rs to kin of the deceased and Rs 50, 000 to the injured.
Both the vehicles, loaded with around 70 migrant workers overturned and fell into the road side ditch. One of the truck was loaded with lime stone too.
The DM said that most of the migrant workers were from Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal and were coming from Delhi.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Archana Srivastava confirmed that 24 people were brought dead while 35 migrants including, 15 were critically injured and have been rushed to Saifai PGI in Etawah.
Other 20 injured migrants were admitted to the district hospital.
She said that the migrant workers were going to Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand from Rajasthan.
Officials said that the deceased were identified as Rahul, Nand Kishore, Kani Lal, Raja Goswami, Govardhan, Uttam Goswami, Doctor Mahato and Somnath Goswami (All from Bokaro in Jharkhand ) ,Milan, Sujit Mahato, Ganesh and Chandan Rajbhar, (all from Purulia in West Bengal) and Kedar Yadav, Satyendra (all Gaya in Bihar ).
Five victims bodies were yet to be identified, sources said.
IG (Kanpur) Mohit Agarwal, who rushed to the spot on the instruction of state CM Yogi Adityanath, has started a probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, the CM has taken congizance of the unfortunate incident in Auraiya and has taken stern step against the policemen by suspending two SHOs of Auriyya and sought clarifications from senior police officials of Agra and Mathura, including SPs, IG and ADG.
He has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the labourers who lost their lives and announced Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the deceased families and Rs 50, 000 to the injured.
The CM has also directed that all the injured be provided medical care immediately and the Commissioner and IG Kanpur to visit the site and give the report on the cause of the accident immediately.
Other politicians also expressed their grief over the accident.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and BSP president Mayawati have condoled the death of migrant workers in the accident in Auriyya and also demanded adequate compensation from the UP government.
Akhilesh Yadsv in his tweet slammed the Yogi government for laxity which led to the accident and demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the deceased families.
The SP president said that it was murder of the migrants by the state government by ignoring their plight. He said the party will provide Rs 1 lakh each to the family of the deceased.
