In what could give some relief to the Goa Police, Yaniv Benaim alias Atala, the Israeli drug lord who managed the give the police a slip, was arrested by the Interpol in the South American country Peru.
It may be recalled that Atala jumped bail granted to him by the NDPS Court in Goa and had returned to his home country leaving the Goa Police red faced. Atala is a crucial link in the police-drug dealers nexus that is being probed by the Crime Branch in Goa after Atala’s ex-girlfriend Lucky Farmhouse posted a video clip of Atala boasting about his links on a social networking site.
Atala is also a crucial link to establish the involvement of Roy Naik, Home Minister Ravi Naik’s son as he also boasted about his closeness to him.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravindra Yadav while disclosing that Atala was arrested due to the look out notice issued by the Police for him, said the Goa Police will now initiate extradition proceedings to get Atala back to Goa to face trial.
Atala was arrested on 11th March last year following Lucky Farmhouse’s revelation and he was declared missing from 7th August last year after he failed to turn up at the police station to record his statement.
Investigations in Atala’s links with police had led to seven policemen including Police Inspector Ashish Shirodkar who was heading the Anti-Narcotic Cell being suspended from service and also arrested.
