Taxi-driver stir turns violent, police resort to Lathi-Charge

Goa taxi operators’ stir turned violent Monday night leaving several persons including policemen injured after the agitators pelted stones on the police who retaliated with lathi charge and trear gas shells.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of tourists were left stranded as groups of taxi owners prevented other taxis and private cars from ferrying tourists to the airport, railway stations and on sight-seeing trips. Sporadic incidents of violence were also reported in Dabolim, Calangute and near Siolim bridge. Ten drivers were arrested in Morjim by the police for blocking the road and disrupting traffic.

A group of around 200 taximen were stopped by the police on Chogm road, Porvorim Monday ngiht when were proceeding to Panaji. BJP’s MLA from Calangute told the police that the chief minister Manohar Parrikar had called a ten member delegation to meet him to resolve the issue. The other striking drivers protested and soon stone pelting started. Stones rained on them injuring policemen and others. The police resorted to lathi charge. Seven taxi operators were arrested later.
