Education Minister Babush Monseratte appears to be planning to have all the 30 corporators to the Corporation of City of Panaji elected unopposed as he announced his panel for the polls scheduled to be held in March this year.
Interestingly, he has named 14 women candidates, which is more than the 33 per cent reservation for women and of the 30 candidates as many as 16 are new faces.
Although Babush had assured that tainted persons will not be fielded as candidates, Uday Madkaikar and Naguesh Kareshetty who have been accused of being involved in many a scam in the corporation, find place in his panel.
However, Daya Karapurkar who was accused of being involved in many controversies has been dropped from his panel along with others including Avinash Bhonsle, Melita Afonso, Anthony Pereira, Uma Naik, Susheela Naik and Oldwin Soares.
Mayor Carolina Po, former mayor Tony Rodrigues and Deputy Mayor Yatin Parekh have been re-nominated.
Babush panel comprises of Ana Lobo (Ward no 1), Nazareth Cabral (2), Margarida Coelho (3), Carolina Po (4), Rupesh Shirgaonkar (5), Bento Lorena (6), Regina Almeida (7), Domnic Fernandes (8) Nagesh Kareshetty (9), Dr Tosha Kurade (10), Kabir Makhija (11), Prasad Amonkar (12), Mangala Karapurkar (13), Yatin Parekh (14), Mangaldas Naik (15), Anjali Naik (16), Uday Madkaikar (17) Tony Rodrigues (18), Maria Fernandes (19), Krishna Shirodkar (20), Gangaram Kale (21), Hema Chopdekar (22), Rudresh Chodankar (23), Manda Shetye (24), Nameeta Narvekar (25), Dennis Jorge (26), Suraj Kandolkar (27), Sujata Haldankar (28), Vanita Fernandes (29) and Vivina Nasnodkar (30)
It is the presence of the Nazareth Cabral and Rudresh Chodankar who were known BJP supporters and members in Babush’s panel that has created political buzz that he is trying to get the Corporation of City of Panjim constituted unanimously.
