Education Minister Babush Monserrate is reportedly eyeing the Urban Development portfolio to enable him to prepare for the next assembly elections where he has vowed to contest from Panjim
In a bid to pressurize Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to reshuffle the portfolios, Babush has reportedly stage managed the garbage crisis in Panjim and further asked the Corporators owing allegiance to him to resign from office on Monday.
For the last four days, garbage has been accumulating in the capital city after the Taleigao Village Panchayat served a notice to the Corporation of City of Panaji not to dump its garbage at the site within its jurisdiction.
Significantly, Babush has a stranglehold over the Taleigao village panchayat and such a notice would not have been issued without his blessing.
Panaji Mayor Yatin Paresh while admitting that the Corporators have decided to resign on Monday, said the reason was primarily because of the government’s failure to address the various issues including garbage, facing the capital city.
Sources revealed that Babush had asked the party High Command to give him the Urban Development ministry, but the request was turned down.
He apparently wants the Urban Development portfolio to give Panjim a face lift before the next assembly election in order to bolster his chances when he takes on BJP’s Manohar Parrikar.
