The promise of development coupled with the largesse showered on the electorate helped Education Minister Babush Monserrate retain control over the City Corporation of Panjim, albeit with a reduced majority as his panel secured a wafer thin majority of 16 seats in 30 member civic body.
Panaji First, the panel floated by Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar bagged 12 seats while two seats were won by independent candidates namely Surendra Furtado and his wife Ruth Furtado who were elected from Ward Nos. 9 and 10 comprising the Miramar area.
13 of those elected were sitting corporators while in ward No. 28 where Nivedita Chopdekar was declared elected was represented by her husband earlier.
The highest victory margin of 260 votes was achieved by Krishna Shirodkar in ward No. 20 while in neighbouring ward No. 19 Maria Pereira Fernandes won by the slenderest margin of four votes.
The BJP sponsored panel suffered the ignominy of the loss of Ashok Naik who was projected as its candidate for mayor. Yatin Parikh the sitting corporator defeated him by 111 votes. In ward No. 17 too the BJP sponsored candidate suffered miserably as he was pushed to the third position. While Prajot Vaigankar fielded by Babush Monserrate won handsomely, Udai Madkaikar who was dropped by Babush came second with 270 votes.
In all probabilities Carolina Po may be inducted as the Mayor once again to quell the fight between Rudresh Chodankar and Yatin Parikh to be nominated to this position as all three of them are getting elected for the third time on a trot and Carolina has the advantage of not only being the outgoing Mayor but also a lady.
The new corporators of City Corporation of Panjim are as follows:
