Accusing the police of harassing residents of Balli under the guise of investigating the murder of two tribal leaders in the village on 25th May, locals have threatened to launch an agitation if the same is not stopped within 10 days.
Speaking to media persons, representatives of the villagers also demanded that the police investigate all angles of the agitation including the behavior of the tribals who were agitating that day.
The locals demanded that United Tribals Associations Alliance leaders Prakash Velip, MLA Ramesh Tawadkar and Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s personal assistant Prakash Velip be also arrested for the 25th May incident.
They also demanded that the police found out how four persons were rescued from the Adarsh building and two died and extended support to G P Naik who was placed under suspension just one day prior to his retirement as Collector of South Goa.
Vishwanath Faldesai speaking on behalf of the villagers while pointing out that the locals helped the police on that day when they were outnumbered by the agitators, said they were willing to co-operate with the investigating agencies provided they come to Cuncolim police station to record their statements instead of summoning the poor locals to Panjim.
He also demanded that the police find out the reason why the tribals had gathered at Balli armed with axes and dandas.
Prashanti Faldessai recalling the incident said the tribals had started stoning people’s houses and asserted that they would not take such attacks lying down.
