Ban on Liquor Sale In Municipal Areas Lifted

The State Election Commission has lifted the ban on the sale of liquor in municipal areas from 1st May. The sale of liquor was banned due to the code of conduct for upcoming panchayat elections.

Subsequent to the demands from the tourism industry, Election Commissioner Dr M Modassir issued orders exempting bars and restaurants in the municipal areas from mandatory closure of activity at 11 pm.

Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) Spokesperson Ralph D’Souza informed that the commission has now allowed bars to run till 11.30 pm, while food can be served even till late night.

He informed that the tourism industry was going through a bad phase due to these restrictions in the municipal areas. He further added that there was no clarity on the closure of the restaurants. “The officials used to stop establishments from serving food after 11 pm,” he informed.
