Bar Association in Jammu & Kashmir threatens indefinite hunger strike

The Bar Association Handwara (BAH) in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) has threatened to go an indefinite hunger strike over withdrawal of security cover to the Munsiff/ Judicial Magistrate, Handwara.

A letter addressed by the Executive Committee of BAH to the Director General of Police, J&K on Wednesday requested that “proper security cover be provided to the Hon’ble Judicial Magistrate 1st class immediately.”

“In case you fail to do the needful, the Bar Association Handwara has decided to go on an indefinite hunger strike,” the letter said.

Security is provided to the judges as per High Court rules and orders and the Judicial Magistrate Handwara has a right and privilege to have the security cover, it added.

President Bar Association Handwara, Ghulam Nabi Kaboo confirmed the same to Bar & Bench.

“If the officials fail to do needful, then BAH will go on an indefinite hunger strike,” he said.

He further informed that the Magistrate is currently without security security cover after it was withdrawn.

However, Superintendent of Police, Handwara Dr. GV Sundeep Chakravarthy told Bar & Bench that security cover will be provided to the judge soon.

“The current security personnel had some issues, therefore, we removed them and will give him new security cover,” he said.
