Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) has called for a Goa bandh on 6th June to protest against the government’s decision to provide grants to English medium primary schools.
Protesting against the decision, its activists staged rasta rokos at Porvorim and Margao on Friday causing a lot of inconvenience to commuters.
Though BBSM had planned to block the road near Sai Service centre and Malim jetty, seeing the strong police presence they changed their plans and blocked the road near O Coqueiro.
BBSM Convenor Shashikala Kakodkar said the Friday protests were only token demonstrations and threatened to launch a mass movement against the government’s decision if the policy is not withdrawn by 6th June.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has extended its support to the BBSM and its MLAs Anant Shet, Dayanand Mandrekar and Rajesh Patnekar were present at the rasta roko at Porvorim.
At Margao, the rasta roko was held near the KTC bus stand for nearly two hours. Uday Bhembre who led the agitation here said the government would be overthrown if it did not reverse its decision over the Medium of Instruction.
He said the decision was not in the interest of the State but only to enable Digambar Kamat to continue as Chief Minister and pointed out that educationists were not consulted before taking the decision,
Meanwhile, the United Goans Democratic Party Secretary General Anacleto Viegas also supported the BBSM.
