The Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) will not participate in the crucial meeting scheduled for 18th May at Delhi to decide over the Medium of Instruction (MoI) issue.
BBSM Convener Shashikala Kakodkar said there was no point in attending the meeting as they are opposed to any dilutions of the present policy.
The MoI has spur into a major political issue in Goa with the ruling Congress vertically split on the issue. While most of the Catholic legislators of the Congress party representing the constituencies from Old Conquests of Mormugao, Tiswadi, Bardez and Salcete supporting the demand for recognition of English as MoI and legislators from the new Conquests of pernem, Bicholim, Sattari, Ponda amd Quepem objecting to it.
Caught in a quandary, the Congress party in Goa turned to the High Command for help and Jagmeet Singh Brar was deputed to discuss the issue.
Taking cognizance of the complexities involved particularly given the fact that Goa is scheduled to go through polls within a year; a high-level meeting was scheduled in Delhi on 18th May with the Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal and Minister for Minorities Salman Khurshid.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, PWD Minister Churchill Alemao who is leading the supporters of English MoI and other stakeholders were scheduled to discuss this matter.
However, BBSM refusing to attend the meet, it will be only Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party that will have to argue in favour of status quo.
