The Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) announced a fresh campaign commencing from 23rd June to protest against the government’s decision to give grants to English medium primary school.
Briefing media persons, BBSM Convener Shashikala Kakodkar said the campaign that will end on 26th July is aimed at garnering public support to their protests against the government’s decision.
Dharnas and protest marches are planned at Panjim, Porovorim, Mapusa, Mandrem, Pernem, Bicholim, Sanquelim, Valpoi, Dharbandora, Ponda, Shiroda, Margao, Cuncolim, Mormugao, Sanguem, Curchorem, Quepem and Canacona during this period.
The commencement of this new campaign coincides with the deadline given by the Education Department to schools to submit the forms filled by the parents specifying their choice of medium of instruction.
Besides, BBSM will boycott all government functions where ministers or MLAs from the ruling dispensation are present. Kakodkar also did not rule out the possibility of disrupting these functions.
Subhash Velingkar accused the ADEIs of dissuading parents from opting for regional languages and said he has received several complaints that the ADEIs who are supposed to collect the form from the schools have been asking parents to opt for English in order not to be the odd ones out.
