Beto O’Rourke bows out of 2020 US presidential race

Washington, Nov 2 (GCCurrentAffairs) Former US Congressman and Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke has announced on Twitter that he is dropping out of the 2020 US presidential race.
“I am announcing that my service to the country will not be as a candidate or as a nominee,” Mr O’Rourke said in a series of tweets on Friday.
Talking to his supporters in Des Moines, where he was scheduled to speak at the Liberty & Justice Celebration on Friday night, Mr O’Rourke pledged to that he would work to ensure that the Democratic nominee is successful in defeating President Donald Trump in 2020, The New York Times reported.
“Though this is the end of this campaign, we are right in the middle of this fight. I will do everything that I can to support the eventual nominee of this party with everything that I’ve got, and I encourage every single one of you to do the same,” he posted on social media.
”Whether it is ending the epidemic of gun violence or dismantling structural racism or successfully confronting climate change, we will continue to organise and mobilise and act,” Mr O’Rourke said.
Over the past week, the former Congressman had drawn criticism after he compared Mr Trump and his administration to Nazi Germany in an interview.
Mr O’ Rourke, who began his White House run to great fanfare, failed to garner significant support.
After Mr O’ Rourke’s announcement, Mr Trump tweeted, “Oh no, Beto just dropped out of the race for President despite him saying he was “born for this.” I don’t think so!”
