It was show of strength for Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao at Davorlim panchayat ground on Monday morning when was felicitated by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on his 62nd birthday.
A huge crowd of around 5,000 braved the scorching sun to attend the programme where representatives of each of the panchayats of Navelim constituency eulogized him.
“Congress needs Churchill” was the refrain of all the Congress grass root as well as state-level leaders’ speeches.
While Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Subhash Shirodkar assured the crowd that Churchill will continue to be their MLA, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat confessed that Churchill has come to his rescue whenever he was in trouble and praised Churchill for his heart that beats for the common man.
Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao while recalling how Churchill looked after and kept the family together, said that he was confident that Churchill would not desert the Congress party.
Fr. Erobiano Fernandes, Chaplain of Ilha de Rachol while revealing that he is a Congressman, congratulated Churchill for bringing the Davorlim panchayat into Congress hold and breaking Bharatiya Janata Party’s hold over it.
Churchill, in his address, thanked Goa and Our Lady of Vailankanni for all their graces and asserted that he never left the Congress party, but it was the Congress party that had abandoned him.
“I shall be the candidate from Navelim constituency at the next elections and to give me the Congress ticket or not is in your hands”, he said to Subhash Shirodkar with a veiled threat that with God’s blessing and peoples’ support he can work miracles.
Churchill bestowed goodies on his electorate in the form of note books, paddy seeds, cylinders, gas stoves and cheques amounting to Rs. 1 crore under the Indira Awas Yojana to the gathered crowd. And probably that was the reason why the people braved the scorching summer heat to wish their MLA on his birthday.
