The Sewerage & Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd. (SIDCGL) has reportedly roped in experts from BITS Pilani to find the cause of River Sal’s contamination in order to absolve its Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Sirvodem of the charge.
SIDCGL Chairman Ganashyam Shirodkar while asserting that the Sirvodem STP was not responsible for the river’s contamination disclosed that BITS Pilani has been asked to look into the matter and revealed that water samples from the river from different locations, starting from Khareband have already been collected.
Besides, water samples from the various drains emptying into the river including the one passing by ESI and Kudchadkar hospitals have also been collected.
Speaking in defense of the Sirvodem STP, he said the plant was treating only around 4 to 5 MLD of sewage as against its installed capacity of 7 MLD and further asserted that the plant was operating strictly by the standards laid down by the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
He however did not rule out the possibility of the drains emptying into the river causing its contamination and that is the reason why samples from these drains have also been collected.
Shirodkar disclosed that work on connecting all areas of Margao to the Sirvodem STP is taken up on a war footing. While the SIDCGL will take up the work of laying the sewerage line from Hari Mandir to Chowgule College, another agency will take up the work at Colmorod and Calcondem areas.
